Marbella, on the Costa del Sol and less than an hour from Malaga, is a cosmopolitan, chic resort with a charming old town. This area, recognised for its luxury, is full of classy restaurants, golf courses, casinos, and a beautiful marina. Its lavish lifestyle also makes it a favourite among the rich and famous.

Although an established and successful city, Marbella's development is ongoing with the creation of Port Al-Thani to be completed in 2015. This port will make this an even more extravagant destination with further space for cruise liners and private yachts, five star hotels and shops.

The Golden Mile and Puerto Banus

Marbella is home to exclusive areas including the Golden Mile, a strip located to the west of the city and full of impressive estates, businesses and five star hotels, which leads into the elite Puerto Banus. Once just a port, Puerto Banus has grown to include shopping centres, a casino, a cinema and its own El Corte Ingles. These areas boast glamorous nightlife with a collection of stylish clubs, bars and discos. In the summer months, the popular beach bars also open for residents and tourists alike.

History, Culture & Shopping

The Orange Square, another highly visited area, is found in Marbella's Old Town. Dating back to 1485, there is a selection of significant historical and architectural sights including the town hall, the chapel of Santiago and the church of Saint Mary. Surrounding the Orange Square, you can explore the streets lined with typical Andalucian white washed houses as well as churches and little shops.

Other places of interest in Marbella include the museums, for example the Bonsai Museum and the Museum of Spanish Contemporary Engravings. The public gardens of Marbella are also a place to visit, pass time and enjoy the beauty of nature, in particular La Alameda.

For a leisurely stroll through Marbella, the promenade is the perfect setting as one of the most attractive in the Costa del Sol, near shops, restaurants and the centre of town. Or for keen shoppers, Marbella holds shopping complexes, for example the popular La Cañada, hypermarkets, international chains, designer labels and exclusive boutiques.

Marbella's festivities take place during the San Bernabe festival in early June, which celebrates the traditions of Andalucia with fairs during the day, concerts and performances.
