To golf players, the Costa del Sol is like Heaven on Earth. They can find all they need to play their favourite sport, thanks to the efforts of Málaga-based businessmen to provide an ever wider range of top-quality products to golf travellers. Every township on the Costa del Sol has golf-related facilities or services. Currently, there’re 60 golf courses available in 20 coastal and hinterland towns, and a similar number of hotels equipped to meet golfers' demands.

Golf expansion policies in Málaga Province have been characterised by professionalism. This is why so many national and international tournaments have been held here. A brief look at the calendar of golf events in the province is enough to realise how important its golf courses have become: Ryder Cup 1997, Open de España, World Golf Championships, winter headquarters to European Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA), and many others.

The cradle of golf in Spain, the Costa del Sol boasts of being home to golf celebrities, who come on a regular basis to indulge in their favourite sport. Even when they retire from the international scene, they get so attached to golf and the Costa del Sol that they stay connected, teaching would-be golfers, giving advice, or taking part in local tournaments throughout the year. Former World No. 1 Severiano Ballesteros, one of the sport's leading figures from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s, or leading British golf instructor David Leadbetter are among them.
